Gaiteros de San Jacinto at Terraza from Michal Shapiro on Vimeo.
Sometimes you find a little club in NYC that is special, and Terraza in Elmhurst is certainly one of them. Tucked away into a side street just by the Number 7 Train stop, it regularly showcases Latin music that ranges from the roots to cutting edge contemporary. The Gaiteros are practically an institution in Colombian folk music, (the gaita is the long flute they are playing) and the audience was up and dancing almost as soon as the drums kicked in. The songs seemed to be familiar to many in the crowd, and the evening picked up steam from then on. My video is of the first song of the evening, and I tried to provide a sense of the place, as much as the music.
