Jitka Šuranská and Pakora Trio at Crossroads Festival, Ostrava Czech Republic from Michal Shapiro on Vimeo.

The first night of the Colours of Ostava Festival was set aside for an all Czech music evening called Crossroads. This clip is from a set by Jitka Šuranská, a very strong violinist and singer, specializing in the music of her homeland, Moriavia. Here she is backed up by the formidable Pacora Trio, a much in-demand local band.

The Pacora Trio is:
Stano Paluch – violin, Marcel Comendant – cymbalom, and Robert Ragan – double bass.

Of the song, Jitka writes:
“The song is the melancholic wish of a young girl whose boyfriend is in the army – in the war maybe…
She is asking the Emperor to help her to get him home…But she knows it is never going to happen..
A very sad story in the very poetic Moravian language.”

Here’s where you’ll find my weekly original world music video blogs that appear on Huffington Post, as well as an archive starting in April of 2009.

This is also the place where you will find video that is exclusive to my site. I’ve traveled to places like Uzbekistan, Morocco, and Taiwan and no matter where I go I have found amazingly talented and creative people working in every genre from the deepest traditions to the cutting edge.

It’s been incredibly rewarding to interview them and to capture some of what they do on video. Enjoy what you see and hear, and let me know what you think. I welcome your feedback.
