clogdancing horse from Michal Shapiro on Vimeo.

While covering the English Folk Expo, I was treated to a delightful performance from the Lancashire Wallopers, which included this whimsical vaudeville act. Clog Dancing originated in the Lancashire Wool mills, and developed into the sophisticated form you see here. More to come from this show too.

Fifty Verses from Michal Shapiro on Vimeo.

This is, I think a literally entrancing song. It is written by Nancy Kerr, half of the duet of Nancy Kerr and James Fagan. They are joined here by Jess and Richard Arrowsmith and together they are the Melrose Quartet. The song is a fine example of modern folksmithing and the performance is pure ear candy to boot.

The performance is from the Homegrown Festival a presentation of The Met Arts Center, in collaboration with the English Folk Expo (EFEx) in Bury, UK.

Be Lucky from Michal Shapiro on Vimeo.

The formidable Power Folk trio of Steve Knightley, Phil Beer and Amanda Sykes deliver a lesson on life –and the music business. The performance took place in the Castle Armoury Drill Hall in Bury and the event was a joint production of The Met Arts Center and English Folk Expo (EFEx).

Welcome!

Here’s where you’ll find my weekly original world music video blogs that appear on Huffington Post, as well as an archive starting in April of 2009.

This is also the place where you will find video that is exclusive to my site. I’ve traveled to places like Uzbekistan, Morocco, and Taiwan and no matter where I go I have found amazingly talented and creative people working in every genre from the deepest traditions to the cutting edge.

It’s been incredibly rewarding to interview them and to capture some of what they do on video. Enjoy what you see and hear, and let me know what you think. I welcome your feedback.
